Ultimate Battle: Alcatel Idol 3 vs Moto G3

Alcatel Idol 3 vs Moto G3

The Motorola Moto G3 and the Alcatel Idol 3, both are extremely affordable devices with some really good internals. There are many similarities and dissimilarities between both the devices and in some cases the Moto G3 goes ahead whereas the Alcatel Idol 3 in some other. So today I will be comparing these two devices, both of which are cheap and value for money.

Design and Build

First of all, the Alcatel Idol 3 comes in two different variants in respect of the two different screen sizes. It comes in a 4.7 Inch as well as a 5.5 Inch display so that it appeal both the phablet crowd and the group who likes smaller screen sizes where the Moto G3 comes in a mid 5 Inch screen size. Both the Moto G3 and the variants of Touch 3 are made out of plastic. But within the two, the Alcatel Idol Touch 3 looks much better because of its touch of chrome in the frame, which is missing on the G3. The Moto G3 has a textured back which feels much better in hand than the plastic non-textured back of the Alcatel Idol Touch 3.Other than that the Moto G3 has the familiar Motorola dimple at the back which feels really good. The volume locker is present at the right and power button alongside the SIM/MicroSD card slot is available at the left in case of the Idol Touch 3 whereas all the buttons are available on the right on the G3.Both have front firing speakers but the one on the Alcatel Idol Touch 3 is provided by JBL which provides much crisp and loud sound output.

Display

The Alcatel Idol 3 is available in two different variants, the 5.5 Inch version has a 1080p display with a PPI of 401 whereas the 4.7 Inch variant comes with a 720p display lowering the pixel density to 312 whereas the Motorola Moto G3 supports a 5 Inch IPS LCD panel with a resolution of 1280x720p, delivering a pixel density of 294PPI. Both the devices have great displays at the price point with great viewing angles but the color reproduction is better on the Moto G3 in my opinion.

Performance

The Moto G 2015 edition come in two variants, 1 GB and 2 GB. We are not considering the 1 GB RAM version for this comparison and we also suggest you to spend a few extra bucks and go for the 2 GB RAM version. Coming to the specs, the Alcatel Idol 3 (4.7) Inch variant comes with a Snapdragon 410 processor clocked at a slightly less 1.2 GHz clock speed than the Moto G, which is running at 1.4 Ghz. The Snapdragon 410 processor is a quad core processor with four Cortex A53 cores. The Alcatel Idol 3 (4.7) comes with a gig of RAM whereas the Moto G3 has 2 GB.

Moving to the Alcatel Idol 3 (5.5) Inch variant, it comes no where near the Moto G3 with the Snapdragon 615 chipset which is a octa core processor with four Cortex A53 cores clocked at 1.5 GHz each and four Cortex A53 cores clocked at 1.0 GHz each. Coupled with it, we have 2 GB of RAM for the device to be smooth and responsive.

Both the Alcatel Idol 3 (4.7) and the Moto G3 has the Adreno 306 GPU whereas the Alcatel Idol  3 (5.5) is coupled with the Adreno 405.

At the end, the Alcatel Idol 3 (5.5) wins this round.

 Camera

In terms of Camera, both the Alcatel Idol 3 and the Moto G3 comes with a 13 Mega-Pixel shooter at the back but the Moto G 2015 edition is coupled with a dual LED flash whereas the Idol 3 only has a single LED Flash. At the front, we have a 8 MP shooter in case of the Alcatel Idol 3 whereas we only have a 5 MP in case of the Moto G3. The primary cameras of both the phones can shoot in full 1080p which is nice to get at this price point. The camera application in the Alcatel Idol 3 has a manual mode which enables the users to tweak the white balance, ISO, shutter speed and focus, whereas the Moto G3 is limited in terms of flexibility in the camera app.

UI and OS

The Moto G3 comes with a near to stock android without any skin on the UI, whereas the Alcatel Idol 3 comes with a slightly skinned version of Android. The Moto G 3rd Generation is running the latest version of Android Lollipop, 5.1.1 out of the box whereas you will be presented with a slightly older version of Lollipop on the Alcatel Idol 3. In theory, both the manufacturers have promised to keep their devices up to date to the latest version of Android but practically, Motorola is much better and faster in providing updates to their devices than Alcatel. Although the Alcatel Idol 3 is running a skinned version of Android, there is no lag on the UI whats so ever. The case is similar in case of the Moto G3 as well.

Conclusion

Both the Moto G3 and the Alcatel Idol 3 series are good performers but we still have a winner. Since the Snapdragon 615 is much better than the Snapdragon 410 chipset and we get a much better display, we would conclude the 5.5 Inch variant of the Alcatel Idol 3 as the winner against the Moto G3. If you are willing to go with the 4.7 inch variant, then I would definitely suggest you to add some more bucks and go with the 5.5 Inch variant. If you don’t like big screen sizes, then the Moto G3 might be a winner between the Alcatel Idol 3 and Moto G3.
